The Truth About Vertical Content
You've likely discovered by now that as a brand in the digital world, you must produce content. Luckily, most of us have powerful content machines capable of shooting 4K video and breathtaking images right in our pockets! This article is going to show you why you should fully embrace vertical content.
What is vertical content?
Vertical content, as we are defining it, is a photo or video in the 9:16, 4:5, 2:3, or 1:1 (square) aspect ratio. Here's a great example from Facebook showing all of the popular mobile content formats:
This image alone may show you why you should begin utilizing square/vertical content more often. Simply put, it is more native to social media platforms and fills the consumers screen. The ability to fill the users screen allows for a more engaging experience while making it more difficult to skip past your content in a perpetual scroll that we've all found ourselves in. Consumers are moving faster and faster through social media, retaining less and less. Do what you can to stand out!
How do I make vertical content?
The answer to this question, for most individuals and/or businesses, is simple: hold your smartphone vertically when shooting a video or photo! That's right, you can and should be developing content using your smartphone. Yes, you may invest in an agency to produce larger videos, ad content, etc., but your day to day content publication can largely be done on a smartphone.
If you are using professional photography/videography gear, there are ways to shoot and/or edit in the 9:16/4:5 aspect ratio, thus providing you with vertical content that will feel native to the platform while exceeding standards for quality.
We can't find a compelling reason NOT to go vertical with your social media content, so why not start today? Especially considering that our phones have eliminated the excuses for not producing at least "good enough" content.
